Last Friday, our school celebrated Europe Day. It was a great success. The girls dressed up in the colours of the country that they had studied and got to sample food from all around Europe. Parents came in to taste the food and see the dvd that had been filmed. Well done to Ms O’Toole who worked very hard in organising the day, and many thanks to the parents who kindly supplied dishes from their native countries.
Europe Day was the culmination of the Blue Star programme, which saw each class in our school study a member country of the European Union. The Blue Star Programme introduces participants (pupils, teachers, parents and the wider community) to the EU; what it means and how it works.

As you may know, we have a new Home School Community Co-ordinator room in school. It is located on the third floor above Ms Murray’s office. A little bit of decorating and furnishing has made it a cosy room and it didn’t take me long to settle in! Thanks to Mr O’Flynn who was a great help during the move. Parents are always welcome to come visit me in the room for a chat and a cup of tea. Fiona (086) 6658439.

We in St. Vincent’s GNS are proud to be a designated Green School.
We registered with the programme in 2008 and were delighted to be presented with our first Green Flag in summer 2010 for the great work done by pupils, staff, and the entire school community on the Litter and Waste theme.
Our Litter and Waste motto is
“Make St. Vincent’s a better place
Reduce, reuse, recycle
And make some space!”
We continue to work at recycling and reducing waste since our award, and children receive monthly prizes at assembly for the class that is most conscientious at this work.
We set about work on the Energy theme in 2012 and have worked hard at this for the past two years. All the children in the school helped come up with
Our Energy energy motto is ”St Vincent’s is our name
Energy saving is our game”
We hope to receive our second green flag for energy this Spring.
We have followed the 7 steps of programme, and strove to develop an ever – growing awareness of the need to save energy, t0 reduce consumption both inside and outside our school. Some of the activities we took part in were lessons in many subject areas, poster-making, motto/rhyme writing, and energy workshops among many other activities.

Each of the girls are completing a project on one of the 27 member countries of the EU. They are finding out lots of interesting facts about these countries and their projects will be ready for display soon after the Easter Holidays.
If you would like to find out more about the European Union and its member states then check out the website below. There are lots of games on the site to help you learn in a fun way!
